Assistive Technology Assessments and Training

Technology is a major part of life today...and improves with each passing day.  Computers can make everyone's life easier and more interesting.  Computers in the life of a person with disabilites opens up options that many never felt they had.  Assistive Technology is the use of computer hardware and software, adapted to the specific needs of a disabled person, that significantly improves that person's quality of life.

"AT" can be as simple as a keyboard with big keys or a magnified screen or as complex as a computer that reads and talks or turns on the oven or stereo.  It is always designed to fit a specific individual.

The avenue to findng out what Assistive Technology will work for a particular person is an AT Assessment.  This is a process, taking on the average, about 10 hours, that determines what specific adaptations will work given the subject's situation and desires.  It produces a detailed report with specific recommendations and costs.  Depending on the complexity of the situation AT assessments cost between $500 and $1000 dollars to complete.

Once an assessment is completed, the recommendations can be purchased and, if necessary, installed and recommended training begun.  This can be done by family members or a number of others.  The Assessment will make suggestions as to the next step

Specialized training in using the adaptive devices or programs is often a good idea to insure effective use.  Purchase, installation and training can, in some cases, be arranged with Lakewood Counseling Services at competitive pricing.
